Saving at Sams Club

Discount and warehouse stores are all the rage now, and it is no wonder. Stores like Sam's Club offer good prices on items in bulk. However, in order to truly rake in the savings, you need to consider the needs of your family, and plan accordingly. Even if your family is too small to buy a great deal of perishable food in bulk, you can still save a great deal of money by purchasing nonperishable items from Sam's Club.

Warehouse stores like Sam's Club often require a fee. However, this fee is an annual fee that often costs much less than what you save. At Sam's Club, you can usually get a membership for as low as $30, and not more that $60, depending on the level of membership that you choose. Sam's Club offers great savings for individuals and small businesses alike that can result in you gaining much more than the membership fee you only pay once per year.

No matter the size of your family, Sam's Club offers a great deal to choose from. You can buy large quantities of fruits and vegetables for reasonable prices. Meat also comes in bulk. But what if you have a small family? Chances are that fruits and vegetables will go bad before you eat them all, wasting the money, and require that you buy more in the long run. For a small family, fruits and vegetables are best purchased at more conventional stores.

But the small family can stretch its dollars by shopping at Sam's Club by paying attention to what it buys. Laundry detergent, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper can be bought at lower prices and then will last for a long time. You can get months out of a package of toilet paper (costing as little as $10) or many loads of laundry when you buy in bulk from Sam's Club. Food is even included in this. Sam's Club offers foods that can be frozen. Buy meat that is "reduced for quick sale" and freeze it upon arriving home. My small family divides the meat into portions appropriate for a meal, and then puts them in individual freezer bags to be used in the coming weeks.

Electronics, good quality furniture, and entertainment can be bought for less at Sam's Club. A movie that might cost $12 somewhere else can be had for $7 or $8. Some are even as low as $5.88 for popular titles. Books are also less expensive at Sam's Club. You can save 10 to 30 percent when you make your book purchases from Sam's Club. And electronics are often less as well. Before buying at a sale somewhere else, comparison shop at Sam's Club to see whether you really are getting a good deal.

You do need to be careful, however. Sam's Club is not always the best deal. Sometimes you can find better prices elsewhere. However, for most items you are likely to get a good price and save money. Just make sure you do a little comparison first. Interestingly enough, I find that Wal-Mart offers better selection and prices on diapers. The key to be a frugal shopper is to get the best deal. And while Sam's Club often offers this, you should still check to make sure.
